Temporarily disable Windows Search

It enables us to search files on the PC much faster. You can disable it if it’s causing issues. You may also use any other search app. If you disable this feature, the indexing of all files will stop. But, you will be able to search without it too, but that will take longer time. SuperFetch is a service which decreases the boot time and increases the efficiency of must load programs. But manytimes, it has been found as the root cause behind the disk performance issues in Windows 10 and 8.

Here’s how to stop this service.

  1. Press Windows key + X at the same time. Click on Command Prompt (Admin).
  2. It will open command prompt with administrative privileges.

net.exe stop superfetch

  4. You have to make sure that Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives checkbox is UNTICKED.
  5. Select the drive on which Windows is installed. Usually, it is C:. Then, enter an initial size and maximum size for your virtual memory.
    Initial size – It varies from computer to computer. If you are not sure, then enter the value whatever is in the Recommeded category.
    Maximum size –Set it at about 1.5 times of the physical RAM available on the system. For a PC with 4GB (4096 MB) RAM, it should be not be more than 6144 MB virtual memory. 4096×1.5
  6. Once done, click Set, then OK to continue.
  7. Press Windows Key +R at once. In the run form, type temp and hit enter. The Windows Explorer will open with the temporary files on your computer. Select all and delete them.

Method 5: Disable Antivirus Software temporarily

Disable any installed antivirus or antimalware programs like Norton Kaspersky, AVG, Malwarebytes. Temporarily turn them off or disable them. If disabling them solves the disk usage problem, then contact the vendor of the software to seek their help. You may need to consult the user manuals of third party anivirus and antimalware to temporarily disable them.

Method 6: Change the settings in Google Chrome & Skype

  1. Open Google Chrome, click on the three-dot icon present at the top right corner. Select Settings.
  2. Scroll down and click Settings.
  3. Under Privacy and Security category, ensure that Use A Prediction Service To Load Page More Quickly is turned off.
  4. Ensure that Skype is turned off.
  5. Open Windows Explorer, and go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype\Phone\
  6. Locate Skype.exe and right click on it and select Properties.
  7. Click on Security tab and choose Edit.
  8. Click ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES and make sure to tick the Allow checkbox for Write. Then, click Apply, then OK to save changes.

Method 7: Fix your StorAHCI.sys driver

  2. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers tab. Then, double click the AHCI controller.
